Cet article decrit le role des Eglises dans le reseau charitable protestant. En general ces Eglises assuraient une assistance de base aux membres de leur confession. Vers la fin du siecle elles ont augmente leurs interventions en developpant des services pour les nouveaux immigrants et en construisant les missions, inspirees d'une approche sociale face a la pauvrete, Pourtant les Eglises protestantes n' ont pas ouvert d'orphelinats, de refuges ou de depots pour les pauvres comme le faisaient les congregations religieuses catholiques. Le reseau protestant d'institutions charitables a en effet developpe par l' elite, non pas par les Eglises. Toutefois ces groupes de benevoles etaient fortement influences par la religion et ont maintenu des liens etroits avec le clerge protestant. Abstract: The poor relief system that developed in Montreal over the [XIX.sup.c] century was both private and confessional with separate aid networks for Catholics and Protestants. This article describes the role of the Protestant churches in the Protestant network. In general, churches provided a minimal assistance for members of their congregations. In the last part of the century they increased their implication, developing new services for recent immigrants and establishing missions inspired by the new social approach to poverty. Yet the Protestant churches did not open ophanages, refuges, or aid depots such as those established by Catholic religious communities. It was the elite who established the institutional charitable network for Protestants, not the church. Still, these groups of benevolent philanthropists were strongly influenced by religion and maintained close ties with the Protestant clergy.
